Common Pests
We work in urban and countryside locations including Brighton, Eastbourne and all areas of East Sussex, dealing with common pests.
Among the most common pests we deal with are wasps, bedbugs, squirrels and fleas.
Information about each of these is listed below, but we have details of many more on our main Pest Control Website.
Wasps
Size 12 – 20 mm
Season May – October
Habitat: Woods, hedgerows and other rough places: nests in holes, often in buildings.
The Common Wasp (V. vulgaris) is the wasp that buzzes around our food in late summer.
Look for the prominent bulge on the yellow thoracic stripe.
The face usually has three black spots, and workers and queens have four yellow spots at the rear of the thorax.
Wings are folded along the sides of the body at rest.
The queen is much bigger than the worker.
Bedbugs
Size 4 – 5 mm approx.
Season All year
Habitat: The bedbug is a temporary ecto parasite of humans. When it is not feeding on our blood it hides in cracks, crevices and other harbourages in human habitation.
Their life cycle is one of incomplete metamorphosis, after mating the female lays 4-5 eggs every day
for the rest of her life, (her life span may be several weeks or even months). Eggs hatch in about 10 days at average room temperatures, more quickly at higher temperatures, yet not for several weeks at lower temperatures.
Bedbugs have five nymphal stages each are involving a blood meal, the phase lasts some six weeks, but may be longer in adverse conditions.
Bedbugs are very resistant to starvation; their faeces are often found as semi digested blood. Sometimes old nymphal skins are also found.
Squirrels
.
Season All year
Habitat: Woodlands, Parks, Gardens
Symptoms:
- Noises in the roof
- droppings found in the attic
- Pile of insulation formed in a corner of the loft
- Squirrels seen climbing onto house and enlarging a hole in soffit or fascia
Squirrels, while an appealing animal, are definitely not wanted inside an attic space. They can have two litters a year but the main one is always around February when those noises in the roof may be due to squirrels rather than rats.
Although not disease carrying like a rat, squirrels will gnaw wood and electric cables, urinate throughout the roof, smell badly and cause damage to the property in gnawing an entrance / exit hole.
There are a variety of traps for squirrels and only one approved poison may be used.
Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 it is an offence to release a squirrel once caught.
Squirrels are common visitors to bird tables, if these are positioned further down the garden away from the house itself then you have already reduced somewhat the possibility of them climbing upwards towards the loft.
Fleas
Size 1 – 8 mm
Season All year
Habitat: Brought from outdoors to rooms where pets live.
Symptoms:
- Fleas found
- Bite marks developing
Fleas are predominantly a summertime pest in Sussex that will linger into the autumn months.
Once found within the fabric of the property a few aerosol cans of cheap insecticide will not control an infestation.
When a certain amount of fleas are noticeable away from the host species (eg. cat or dog) then although the pets treatment should continue it’s time to call a professional to treat with chemicals to the property.
Low odour insecticides are used or fumigation (ie – a gas treatment).
Most of these chemicals are practically odourless and thorough surface treatment is applied to floor areas. Any pets and people should be absent while spraying takes place.
Typical drying times are around four hours and no vacuuming should take place for the following fortnight.
There is a gradual improvement noticed almost daily until complete control is attained.
The process is clean and straight forward.
